This week’s Items of Interest:

 

  1. The rise of the UK independent beer sector continues unabated and Bristol is playing a major part in its success. Bristol Beer Week, running at venues across the city between Saturday 27 August and Friday 2 September, celebrates the people at the core of the Bristol beer scene, home to some of the country’s most lauded small breweries and independent establishments.

 

  1. The Avon & Somerset Police & Crime Commissioner is keen to hear what businesses want from the police. This is your opportunity to have your say and to help shape the Police and Crime Plan for our area. The survey, which closes on Tuesday 30 August, can be accessed here.

 

  1. Small business community Enterprise Nation are beginning a series of monthly coffee and conversation mornings in Bristol. The first one takes place on Wednesday 7 September (10am-11.30am) at Café Revival, Corn Street BS1 1JG; to find out more and to book click here.

 

  1. Grow Bristol is a new urban farming enterprise developing innovative and sustainable ways of growing food in the city for the benefit of all its inhabitants and the wider world. The opening of its site in the heart of the city at 16 Feeder Road, BS2 0SB, together with a social enterprise networking event, takes place on Wednesday 7 September (3pm – 7pm); book here.

 

  1. Don’t forget the deadline for entries for this year’s Great British High Street of the Year is Friday 9 September. Categories include the Rising Star Award celebrating high streets that are turning around their fortunes; and High Street Heroes – examples of local business owners and store managers that are working hard for their towns and high streets. Please let us know if you plan to enter, or have already done so.

 

  1. A number of jobs fairs are taking place next month: at the Jobcentre in Horfield on Tuesday 13 September (10am-2pm); and at Shirehampton Jobcentre on Thursday 29 September (10am-2pm). If you’re an employer looking to recruit and would like to take part contact mitchell@bristol.gov.uk. Also, on Friday 9 September (10am-4pm) there will be a Deaf and Disability Careers Fair at the Greenway Centre in Southmead; contact alasdair.grant@deafunity.org for more information.

 

  1. Bristol Doors Open Day, this year on the weekend of Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 September, is a once-a-year chance to look behind closed doors and discover the city’s hidden treasures. You can explore fascinating buildings, join guided tours and enjoy a range of events and activities – all free for the day. Venues include The Island (Nelson Street), Underfall Yard (Cumberland Road), Bottle Yard Studios (Whitchurch Lane), and Filwood Green Business Park (off Hengrove Way). Find out more here.

 

  1. The 2016 Harbourside Christmas Market is accepting applications from new traders and makers; more information here.

 

  1. The Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District proposal continues to be developed, with the focus now on BID priorities. The BID team continue to meet with businesses in the area to be covered, and open consultation sessions are planned. Businesses can also have their say through this survey.

 

  1. The UK Government is seeking views on draft regulations to support business rates appeals reforms. To find out more, and to respond to the consultation which closes on Tuesday 11 October, click here.

 

  1. Bristol has been shortlisted in the Best UK City Break for Families category in the Family Travel Awards 2016. Find out more and vote here; voting closes on Tuesday 20 September.
